People may also come to Canada on a Visitor Visa if they want to explore opportunities to study, work or start a business.
Visitors from certain countries are required to obtain a Temporary Resident Visa in order to enter Canada. General Visitor Visa requirements include the following:
- Valid travel document or passport
- Good health (may require medical exam)
- Proof of funds to cover the visit in Canada
- Ties in home country (work, family, property assets)
- Intent to leave Canada at the end of the visit
Medical exams are mandatory if visitors are planning to visit Canada for more than 6 months and have been to certain countries for more than 6 months before they plan to arrive in Canada.
Those coming from visitor-visa exempt countries and want to travel to Canada by air or transit required to get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) which has a 5-year validity period.
As of June 6, 2023 visa-exempt countries have been expanded to include the following:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Argentina
- Costa Rica
- Morocco
- Panama
- Philippines
- St. Kitts and Nevis
- St. Lucia
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Seychelles
- Thailand
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Uruguay
Travelers from the above countries may travel to Canada visa-free if they had held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or are currently holding a valid US non-immigrant visa.
